The only way to understand if something is viable — whether it’s hardware or software, a content play or marketing concept — is to talk to someone outside of those internal bubbles

Augmented Reality is one of those things that constantly gets debated in the narrowest, horse-race parameters. Talking “Is it hot or not?” avoids the substance.

So to get a sense of the growth opportunities for #AugmentedReality, I turned to an organic farmer on the east end of Long Island. Naturally.

We discussed how farmers could work with emerging tech:

How can we get more utility out of our land?

How can we combat climate change?

How can we produce more healthy food at scale?

Here’s one real world example: farmers are using sensors installed in their fields that are connected to smart devices to determine the quality of the soil. An AR layer can help growers choose the appropriate crops for specific soil conditions.

These ideas tend not to make headlines or drive a wild amount of retweets. But looking beyond the hype cycles in front of us is something everyone in investing, in tech, in media and in marketing needs to be reminded of from time to time. It’s how real business applications ultimately take hold underneath our collective gaze.

I’d love to hear more about the mundane, unsexy, practical use cases for emerging tech you’re seeing. Contact me HERE.
